Victorian Golf...
...did you know that golf was played on our school field? Yes, and I saw it.

One evening when I was walking down the road towards the       gate  on my way home, I heard this tremendous 'WHACK!" and got the shock of my life. It surely cannot be someone getting caned, the sound was too loud! I looked towards the source of the sound and saw but who - our headmaster, who was flailing at this ball and the ball went high into the sky towards where Birch Road was. Our classmate, the son of this headmaster, later ran towards the other side of the field to collect the golf balls.

I am glad this particular headmaster was not fond of caning students, if he can drive a golf ball 300 yds, you can imagine what his caning can do.

The point of my story is though, that golf was played on our school field, besides rugby, football, athletics, etc. I would also bet no other school fields can make claim to this.

Talking about VI headmasters, there was a book review in the papers Sunday 8th October 2000, which involved a VI headmaster in an unfortunate case. For those who did not read that article, here is the gist of it.

It is a review of a book called 'Murder on the Verandah', and is about the murder of a Mr William Steward by Mrs Ethel Proudlock, who was his lover at that time. Mrs Ethel Proudlock was the wife of Mr William Proudlock, who was then the acting headmaster of the Victoria Institution!  I wonder what the Victorians of that time thought of all this. I wonder too if the school's publication at that time said any thing about this.

Another person was also mentioned, a Mr Richard Sidney,
who had followed after Shaw to become the headmaster of the Victoria Institution! According to the reviewer who read the book, Mr Richard Sidney had worked hard to clone VI in the image of an English public school. He was  axed because he, quoting from the book, '...kept company with Chinese and Malays, going to the theatre with them and taking them on  motoring tours. Even worse, he gave every impression of enjoying himself. One wasn't supposed to enjoy Malaya. Malaya was something to be endured, counting the days until the tour expired.'

So   two headmasters       and one acting headmaster got mentioned in this book - the unfortunate Mr William Proudlock, Mr Shaw       and Mr Richard Sidney. What    happened to Ethel though? She was given a royal pardon by the Sultan of Selangor after being imprisoned and went on to Florida.

After all that, does anyone else have  any story about VI headmasters? hmm..something less morbid and more in a lighter vein perhaps? heeheeee....:O)

Start The Week Laughing...
Mr William had a friend whose company he enjoyed because that friend always argued with him. It was the intellectual stimulation that Mr William enjoyed. One day the friend needed a loan badly, and Mr William was only too happy to lend the money. From then on the relationship changed. The friend began to agree with everything Mr William had to say. After several months the frustrated and very bored Mr William told his friend, "Hey, either start arguing with me again, or pay me my money!"
