LET US NOW WITH THANKFULNESS        18TH Issue  11th December 2000
A picture tells a thousand words...
Quick Takes...
**Queen Victoria - Yes, you are not seeing things - that's the portrait of the lady on whose coronation the school was named. Since no one sent any photos of themselves as cover girl or guy, who else but our Grand Lady be our first Cover Girl!
**The Daily Victorian - Watch out for the launch issue. It is a netzine you can help write. Visit the Interactive Community, look for 'Current Affairs', 'Changes -no changes' board. Also, hot topic being discussed there currently is on generational change - is there one or not, and has spilled over into religion, tree hugger, Trojan horse, etc. Go there and read for yourself, and mount your soapbox for your two cents worth too.

**Log-On...
newscientist.com - Remember this magazine we used to read in the library?

**Start This Week Laughing...
Lana Turner - 'A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man.`

A patient woke up one day and found roses growing out of his head. He dashed off to his psychiatrist, who calmly asked him, 'And who sent the roses to you?'
The patient replied, 'Read the card! Read the card!'

**Something...
(continued from last week's Victorian Times...)

Customer Service Rep : My pleasure. Go to your Start menu and invoke FORGIVENESS.EXE. Do this as many
times as necessary until GRUDGE.EXE and RESENTMENT.COM have been completely erased.
Customer :Okay, I'm done. LOVE has started installing itself automatically. Is that normal?
CS Rep : Yes it is. You should receive a message that says it will reinstall for the life of your
HEART. Do you see that message?
Customer : Yes I do. Is it completely installed?
CS Rep : Yes, but remember that you have only the base program. You need to begin connecting to
other HEARTS in order to get the upgrades.
Customer :Oops...I have an error message already. What should I do?
CS Rep :  What does the message say?
Customer :It says ERROR 412 - Program not run on Internal Components." What does that mean?
CS Rep :: Don't worry sir, that's a common problem. it means that the LOVE program is set up to
run on external HEARTS but has not yet been run on your HEART. It is one of those complicated
programming things, but in non-technical terms it means you have to "LOVE" your own machine
before it can "LOVE" others.
Customer :So what should I do?
...to be cont'd next week..

Cover girl for this week - A famous, no, very famous, Malaysian artist painted this portrait, which has hung in the school ever since. Who is this artist? Click on the portrait to read the amazing story behind this painting.

Living well, living to a ripe old age - I don't know how old the above Lady was when the portrait was done, nor how old she was when she called it a day, but she looks like she lived a pretty long life. The current Queen Mother of England has just passed a century, if I remember correctly.

These days, one is overwhelmed by the information on what to do, what to eat, what not to eat, what to do, etc on how to live longer, healthier, and so on.

Is it important to live long? Or a life well lived? Can one live long and not have lived well, or not live long but lived well? Or, not lived long and not lived well?
What is meant by living well? A meaningful life?
Let's dwell on living physically well first.

One never knows what to eat or not to eat - what is safe today is not safe in a few years' time, or is found to be quite useless. For some time now it was said fruits and vegetables will help prevent colon cancer, but now it seems they may not. So it is with other such advice.

I read somewhere the following principles though of living healthily -
1. Exercise right
2. Balanced diet
3. Stress reducing techniques
4. Natural hormones enhancement
5. Optimal supplements.

Life is reduced to a five-step formula.

I have also come across a lady, who is 100. She was born in 1900, and right now, today, NOW, she is still doing yoga and starting up an old folks' home.

HOWZAT?! A 100 yr old person starting up an old folks' home for - persons younger than her??!! Unbelievable, but I kid you not.

She did not have an education until she decided to take it up when she was in her early twenties. She took up learning nursing in her thirties. She took up yoga when she was in her sixties. She only drinks in the morning, eats porridge for lunch and dinner.
In between, she continued to do nursing, starting up old folks' homes, doing community work, etc.

No, she is not rich, not wife of some rich man so she can spend her time doing all this in her leisure time, or have time on her hand so decided to do charity work to fill in her time.

She is 100. She still does yoga, doing the upside down standing on her shoulders stance. This person exists.
You can contact her if you want.

What is life to her? I wonder.

Is it important to live long? Or a life well lived? Can one live long and not have lived well, or not live long but lived well? Or, not lived long and not lived well?
What is meant by living well? A meaningful life?

I think, to live meaningfully, one lives well, and long life is a by product, not an end in itself.

Would you agree?
